On May 10th, 2023, 21 Engineering advance diploma and bachelor telecommunication students had the privilege of visiting Sur Desalination Plant Veolia, organized and accompanied by the OJT coordinator, Mr. Mohamed Syed Ibrahim.
Upon arriving at the plant at around 10 am, the UTAS students team were warmly welcomed by Ms. Khoula Saleh, HR & Administrative Manager - Sur, Oman Bahwan Veolia LLC. Our session started with a thorough Health and Safety orientation by the senior HSE specialist, Mr. Saravanan. Following that, Mr. Omar explained the significance of signals and systems and the importance of SCADA and digital signal processing. He even took us to the control room and gave us a clear explanation of each module.
The tour inside the plant was truly an amazing experience. The operational manager explained in detail the contribution of this desalination plant to the Sultanate of Oman. The UTAS Students team were also given a rare opportunity to witness how wells from the sea were being connected with the plant. This was an unforgettable experience for the students.
After the tour, the students were taken back to the meeting room where all of their doubts were cleared by the Sur desalination team. The students mentioned that this was one of the best and most innovative industrial visits they had ever attended. The coordinator thanked the entire team and invited them to UTAS Ibra campus for student project evaluation and guest lectures.
The session ended with a snack break and a group photo session. The students are grateful to the Industry and Community Engagement Committee for organizing this visit and giving them an opportunity to witness such an extraordinary facility.
ICEC would like to thank Veolia and their team for their warm hospitality and for making this a truly memorable experience for our students.
