Industrial link committee of Engineering department in coordination with OJT department organized a webinar series on 15th October 2020 (6 pm to 8 pm) at zoom platform.

The resource person of the webinar was Dr.Saifur Rahman, Director, Virginia Tech Advanced Research Institute, USA. The event was organized by IEEE-ICT Student Branch in coordination with IEEE Oman Section. IEEE-ICT Student branch webinar organizing committee include Mr.K.Shamganth, IEEE-Branch Counsellor, Mr. V. Loganathan, IEEE-ICT SB Event Coordinator, Ms.K.Santoshi, IEEE-Professional member, Eng Dept, Mr.P.Ramesh, IEEE-Professional member, IT Dept and Mr.Raja Babu,, member organizing Committee, Eng Dept.

This webinar provided detailed information on the compatibility of smart grid for renewable energy integration into the grid. The resource person introduced the concept of smart grid and the role of FACTS devices in the grid. He also explained the advantages of having a smart grid. The evolution of smart grid from intelligent interconnected micro grid was also explained in the session. The electric power and communication infrastructure was dealt in depth with necessary examples.

The integration of wind energy into the grid was explained with case studies from wind power plants in USA. The challenges in using solar PV modules in cold regions of USA was also explained in the session. He also explained the difference between demand response and demand side management. The smart grid ecosystem was explained and the intermittency in renewable energy generation is also addressed. The process of converting a building into smart building was elaborated and cumulative benefits of building load control was also explained in the discussion. Totally 70 participants joined the event from different IEEE Student branches operating in various Academic institutions in Oman.
