Smart City Development through IoT

The IEEE ICT student branch organized a National level online short term course entitled “Smart City Development through IoT” from 27.09.2020 to 29.09.2020 for three days from 04.30 PM to 05.30 PM.

The resource person of the webinar was Dr.Kanagachidambaresan, Associate Professor, Vel Tech University, India. The event was organized by IEEE-ICT Student Branch in coordination with IEEE Oman Section. IEEE-ICT Student branch webinar organizing committee include Mr.K.Shamganth, IEEE-Branch Counsellor, Mr. V. Loganathan, IEEE-ICT SB Event Coordinator, Ms.K.Santoshi, IEEE-Professional member, Eng Dept, Mr.P.Ramesh, IEEE-Professional member, IT Dept and Mr.Raja Babu,, member organizing Committee, Eng Dept.

This webinar provided detailed information on the application of IoT techniques to build a smart city. The resource person demonstrated the operation of programming by executing the codes to be implemented using IoT techniques for smart city construction. He explained it with examples like obtaining clock data, using a camera and opening a spread sheet. The Dos and Donts to be followed before connecting the sensors was also explained during the session. He also explained about the types of clients using the server and the amount of data consumed by the clients.

The difference between the operation of Gmail from web browser and mail application from a smart phone was explained in detail. The real time sensor measurement procedure was also explained with the example of a temperature sensor. Some of the open resource online applications for IoT was also introduced by the resource speaker. He also explained about python programming and the secured working environment which prevails in the system. The encryption standard was explained by the speaker.

The importance in selection of hardware for a particular project was explained in detail. The usage of right kind of sensor and the frequency of the signal to be monitored was explained with suitable examples. He explained about signal sampling theorem and the choice of sensor, processing unit and transceiver. He insisted that interdisciplinary knowledge is necessary for working with these processors. He also explained how elliptic curve cryptography algorithm works for thin client application. The importance of learning the programming for rapid prototype development was emphasized by the speaker.

The processors used for robotics was explained in this session. The speaker also explained about 3-D printers and DSP processors and NVIDIA DGX server. Totally 58 participants joined the event from different IEEE Student branches operating in various Academic institutions in Oman.
