Fiesta Mathematica 2019

Department of Information Technology, Ibra College of Technology provides a platform for Omani youths to showcase their Mathematical and Thinking skills in the form of Fiesta Mathematica 2019 and the Department organized it for the 2nd time on 12th March, 2019 which helps the youth of the great nation as independent thinkers and leaders tomorrow.

The day began with the registration at 8:30 a.m. There were various colleges across the nation for participation which includes Al-Sharqiyah University, Higher College of Technology, Nizwa College of Technology, Caledonian College of Engineering, Al Musanna College of Technology, Ibra College of Technology and schools from North Al-Sharqiyah region.

The mega show of “Intercollegiate Mathematics Talent Hunt” started at 9:15 a.m. For the first round, 100 students participated in the exam of 60 minutes, which is a computer based online exam having 60 questions from Basic, Arithmetic, Algebra, Verbal and non-verbal reasoning, critical thinking. It ended up at 10:15 a.m.

The inaugural ceremony of Fiesta Mathematica 2019 began at 10:30 a.m. In which our chief guest of the day was Dr. Mohammed Rashid Hamdan Al Mamari, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs. Mr. Yaseen Mubarak Mesheimil Al Malki anchored the program and the program started with the recitation from holy Quran by Mr. Mustafa Khalfan Al Mahrouqi. After that chief guest Dr. Mohammed Rashid Hamdan Al Mamari delivered the inaugural address and welcomed all the guests and participants. In his speech, he stressed the need of developing mathematical and critical thinking among Omani youths.

The inaugural ceremony attended by Mr. Wahab Salim Naser Al Hussini HoC-ETC ,Mr. Abdullah Muslem Al Maskary HoS-CSS, Ms. Faiza Al-Harthi, HoD-IT ,Dr. M. A. Davis HoS – Mathematics, Mr. Mohamed Osman HoS – Multimedia, Mohammed Tariq Shaikh,HoS-IT and the other staff member of college.

Mr. Ali Said Al Matari, Head of Department of Education Technology, HRD, North Eastern Education shared his knowledge as an expertise Guest speaker in his lecture entitled “Power of Stimulation” which was insightful, encouraging and thought provoking.

At 12 noon, “Interschool Mathematics Talent Hunt” started and 30 students from various schools from North Al Sharqiyah region took part in a written examination for 60 minutes which had 40 questions of Mental Calculations and Reasoning. “Interschool Mathematics Talent Hunt” was conducted by ICT student Anood Saleh Al Alawi and her team. At the same time, the college students participated in the amusing Quiz program called “Thinking Hats-Math 24” conducted by Ahad Hamad Al Shibli and Eman Mohammed Adi Saif Al Rahbi in which there were a total of 11 teams of 5 members.

The winners of the program “Thinking Hats - Math 24” are as follows:

First Position:

After the program “Thinking Hats”, the participants proceeded for lunch and exhibition. The exhibition arranged by 40 students of Department of IT, ICT under the guidance of dynamic faculty of Mathematics section had interesting Mathematical models, puzzles and games which were displayed to rekindle the reasoning and connecting spirit among students. It created a festive atmosphere among students, where students and staff from all colleges participated with full enthusiasm.

In the last phase of the “Intercollegiate Mathematics Talent Hunt”, three (3) students from each of the 6 institutions were short listed and they are as follows:

Al-Sharqiyah University

The short listed students were divided into 6 teams, one team from each college to participate in the 2nd phase of “Intercollegiate Mathematics Talent Hunt”. This phase consisted of 4 rounds viz. 1. I know Oman 2. Where on the Earth 3. Picture Perfect 4. Rapid Fire Rounds.

Based on first and second round points the jury decided the winners for “Intercollegiate Mathematics Talent Hunt”.

Based on the request by Dr. M. A. Davis HoS – Mathematics, the faculty members and the participants from various institutions across Oman shared their experiences about various events, exhibitions and about the entire program.

After that, Dr. Mohammed Rashid Hamdan Al Mamari, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, Mr. Wahab Salim Naser Al Hussini HoC-ETC , Ms. Faiza Al-Harthi, HoD-IT ,Dr. M. A. Davis HoS – Mathematics, Mr. Mohamed Osman HoS – Multimedia, Mohammed Tariq Shaikh,HoS-IT announced the result of “Intercollegiate Mathematics Talent Hunt” and “Interschool Mathematics Talent Hunt”.

The winners of the program “Intercollegiate Mathematics Talent Hunt” are as follows:

  3. Sheikha Al Alawi, Caledonian College of Engineering

Second Position:

Third Position:

The winners of the program “Interschool Mathematics Talent Hunt” are as follows:

Second position: Taif Mohammed Al Shukairi, Sumaya School
Third position: Abdullah Al-Rahbi, Abdullah Benzaid School

The whole program was fully attended by the students and was well received.

The program ended with the feedback from participants and guests and vote of thanks proposed by Mr. Ranjan Borgohain.
