Fiesta Mathematica 2017 is the brain child of the department of Information Technology to foster critical and mathematical thinking, thus making the youth of this great nation as independent thinkers and leaders of tomorrow.
The day began with the registration at 9:00 A.M. There were various colleges across the nation, who came to participate.
The chief guest of the day was our college dean Dr. Azza Al-Maskari. The program started with the recitation from holy Quran by Younis. After that Ms. Faiza Al-Harthi, Head, Department of Information Technology has delivered the inaugural address and welcomed all the guests and participants. In her speech, she stressed the need of developing mathematical and critical thinking among Omani youth.
There was a series of workshop presentations by the students. A workshop on “critical thinking” by Asma Al-Alawi was quite enriching and interesting. Aziza Al-Brashdi has given a glimpse of the greatest mathematicians through her presentation. The Worksop series ended with team presentation by Aamir, Naama, Asma and Majda on “Introduction to M.S. Mathematics and Graph Design”. The whole program was fully attended by the students and was well received.
Mathematical models, puzzles and game were displayed to rekindle the reasoning and connecting spirit among the students. It created a festive atmosphere among students where serious participation of students were realised.
The mega show “Intercollegiate Mathematics Talent Hunt” has been started at 12:00 Noon. In the first round, 80 students participated in a written examination for 60 minutes and participants proceeded for lunch afterthat. At 1:30 P.M. the screening committee had shortlisted 18 students for second round. They were divided in to six teams, one team for each college. The quiz consist three rounds, it includes “I know Oman”, “Mental Calculation” and “puzzle” round.
After that Ms. Faiza Al-Harthi, HoD-IT and Dr. M.A. Davis HoS-Math has announced the winners of the event.
