Goals:
- Accuracy versus Fluency: Students should be encouraged to use the language, have fun with it, experiment with it – to test it and test themselves against its rules – before worrying too much about accuracy in pronunciation, grammar, or lexicon.
- Vocabulary :The general view was that vocabulary grows as students come to see reading as a source of pleasure, become more active readers, and read more but that our students on the whole have little time or inclination to develop this interest. However, it is not intended as a list of words to be memorized or taught out of context. Rather, these are words that students should be exposed to and encounter in a variety of contexts, with a variety of associations. In the process, they will become more comprehensible and more familiar.
- Spelling : As for spelling, the view of the group was that some words are too ubiquitous and too basic to be misspelled; these are words that can interfere with communication and leave the wrong impression of a student's competence in the language. Students should be required to learn to spell them correctly. Again, spelling words should not be taught in isolation. Students learn how to spell best when they uncover a need to spell correctly first.
- Learning Skills:Learning skills are important skills for students to acquire in their English language classes: what is expected of students as students at the tertiary level, what their routine obligations are, how they should behave.
