Power Generation Using Renewable Energy Sources

Posted: 14/04/2013 Contributor: Mr. TK Deepak

A seminar on power generation using various renewable energy technologies was organized by Lucas-Nuelle from Germany in collaboration with IMTAC LLC, Oman on 8th April 2013 at Hotel Muscat Holiday Inn. This one-day event highlights the integration of renewable energy sources like solar and wind energies with conventional methods of power generation. The engineering department was represented by key members of the faculty – Mr. Syed Mohammad Saad, head of section and Mr. G. Sivakumar, lecturer, both from the mechanical section.

Renewable energy technology is the latest trend of power generation using various sources such as sunlight, wind, water, geothermal, heat, etc. These are natural sources that go with the normal cycle of biodiversity in the world we live in. At present, the world is very much dependent on fossil fuels like, coal, oil and natural gas as the main source for power generation. It is evident however, that eventually these non-renewable energy resources will be depleted and we need to develop an infrastructure of power generation using new technologies.

Delegates in this seminar believe that the future of power generation lies on renewable energy sources, and GCC have the cutting-edge for tapping solar and wind energy.

Digital Manufacturing Seminar – an Initiative to Professional Growth

Posted: 13/04/2013 Contributor: Mr. TK Deepak

"Digital Manufacturing" is one of the most recent developments in the field of Mechanical Engineering. This was the focus of the seminar organized by the Engineering Staff Development Committee on the 25th March 2013 at the Telecommunications Laboratory.

The resource speaker, Mr. Dhanaraj Ramachandran, lecturer in Mechanical Engineering presented the basic concepts of digital manufacturing as a new platform in the product and process design. Digital manufacturing uses an integrated, computer-based system that covers all the production processes from defining and planning to creating, monitoring and controlling. This allows the manufacturing engineers to validate and optimize the manufacturing processes using powerful integrated suite that supports manufacturing process design, tool design, plant layout and visualization through virtual simulation tools.

"It was a great learning experience to have the basic knowledge in the new technology of digital manufacturing," Mr. Syed Mohammad Saad, HOS-Mechanical commented. He encouraged the faculty members to conduct more training initiatives as part of professional growth and development that would ultimately benefit the engineering students of the College.

Seminar on "Non Conventional Sources of Energy"

The mechanical section of the Engineering Department organized a seminar entitled “Non Conventional Sources of Energy” in the college main hall on 27th march, 2013. Mr. Nasser Sulaiman Al Harthi and Mr. Dawood Sulaiman Al – Mabsli, both students of Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, were the key speakers in the seminar. These students under the able guidance of Mr. Syed Mohammed Saad, HOS, Mechanical section and with pivotal support of Mr. Gopi and Mr. Deepak, made a commendable presentation highlighting the different types of non – conventional energy sources and their advantages, particularly for the sultanate of Oman.

The students were given a complete freedom to develop their ideas about the topic using their own knowledge and skills. Their mentors, later, helped them in improving and refining these ideas so as to give these ideas the shape of a worthy seminar. The main objective of the seminar was to enhance the presentation and communication skills of our students besides their technical skills. Further, events like this help many non – participant students to overcome their hesitation and wariness of standing on the dais.

In his concluding remarks, the patron of the seminar Dr. Faris Salman Majeed Al – Naimy, HOD, Engineering Department, appreciated the participants as well as their mentors for the remarkable endeavor and also encouraged the students in audience to be a part of such events.
