About Engineering Department
Engineering is the biggest and most dynamic department at Ibra College of Technology. It started as a Vocational Training Institute in 1982, and from then on, it underwent series of transformations in its program structure to continuously keep abreast with the changing market demands of the Sultanate.
Today, engineering department has 80 well-diversified and highly qualified staffs providing technical trainings to more than 1200 students. It offers specializations leading to a career in Electrical, Electronics and Communications, Computer, Mechanical and Architectural Engineering. In Spring, 2013 the department started offering Quantity Surveying, another lucrative specialization for novices seeking a brighter future ahead.
Under the leadership of its incumbent head, Dr. Faris Salman Al-Naimy, Engineering department perpetually assumes its role in the societal and technological transformations of Oman.
Engineering department boasts of its state-of the-art learning and training equipment and facilities. Some of which are acquired as a result of its strong industry linkages with other private institutions like the Oman LNG, who have generously donated the Electronics and Telecommunications Laboratories in 2005 and the recently inaugurated Chemistry and Physics Laboratories. These laboratories are all well-designed and carefully tailored to suit the practical training needs of the students.
As soon as the students complete the courses required for a particular level of study, they are immersed in the On-the-Job Training in various industrial companies. The department has established memorandum of agreements with so many companies including Mazoon Electricity Company, Oman LNG, OMIFCO, Bank Muscat, Ministry of Health and Education, Arabian Industries LLC, Bahwan Engineering, Oman Cement Company, Public Authority of Electricity and Water, Al Ghubrah Power and Desalination Company, and a lot more. With this, the department ensures that the technical skills the students acquired from the College trainings are reinforced with the first-hand experiences of the real world scenarios they will face as soon as they graduate from the College.
Engineering department is not only concerned with the technical skills development of students. Over and above these, the holistic approach is also integrated in the students' pursuit for quality education. ICT is the only college of technology and the third institution of higher learning in the Sultanate to be affiliated to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world's largest professional organization for the advancement of humanity and technology. Aside from this, ICT is also the only college in the Sultanate to be accepted as a student branch by the Institute for Engineering and Technology (IET), a UK-based international organization sharing and advancing knowledge throughout the global science, engineering and technology. Through the extra-curricular activities, such as seminars, industrial exposure trips, guest lectures and community outreach, that these societies are organizing; engineering students are molded, trained and prepared to become future leaders.
Professional growth of the staff is also part of the department's goal. Continuing education and re-trainings are provided to staffs through various in-house and out-of campus trainings conducted through staff development programs. The Engineering staffs are equally engaged and sharing in the process of transformation as they continue to be visible in the international research arena. To date, engineering staffs have actively participated and published a number of refereed papers in both local and international journals, conferences and symposia. Mr. Arnold N. Santos, Head of Electrical and Electronics Engineering was recently elected as one of the executive board members of IEEE-Oman section.
The new leadership style and excellent managerial skills of the incumbent head propelled the department to a new depth of excellence as students continue to bring glory for the College as they participate and shine in various local and regional contests and competitions. Noteworthy among these are the participation in the 2nd Gulf Programming Contest held at Abu Dhabi, UAE; the recent triumph in the 1st Student Creativity Forum organized by the Ministry of Higher Education under the patronage of the Ministry of Information at the Oman International Exhibition Center in Muscat; and the "Best Scientific Merit Award" for the project Electrocardiogram and Blood Pressure Monitoring System in the 4th National Student Gathering held at Sultan Qaboos University.
ICT Engineering Department will remain the department of choice for all future builders of Oman. We shall strive and shall not stop until the good is better and the better is best! Indeed, the ICT Engineering department is committed to excellence and will continue to define innovations in the 21st century!
Message from HOD
Our department is one of the largest departments in the institute in terms of number of faculty members, students enrolled and researching. The department has made rapid strides during the last years in all spheres of education and research. However, our size still allows close interaction between faculty and students at all levels. We strive to be at the forefront of research, to educate our students in core fundamentals, and to engage students with emerging technologies and their applications.
We provide a very informal atmosphere between faculty and students. Faculty members of our department are not only engaged in cutting edge technology research but are also very passionate about teaching. We pride on having persons with exceptional academic background as our faculty colleagues.
The Department runs five undergraduate programmes, namely Electronic & Communication, Electrical, Computer, Mechanical and Architecture. The department is planning to run Quantity Survey Engineering specialization.
I hope you will browse through our website, and contact me if you have any questions or comments.
Faris S. Al-Namiy, PhD
